New page

'''SKILLS AT CREATION'''

In Storm & Steel, characters will receive many kinds of skills based on their classes, race, occupations, heritage, culture, background, and the general imagination of the player. This step is done after the player selects the character's race, class, and any occupations that the character engages in. The Game Master and the player walk through a condensed list of skills found on their character's skill sheet and record whichever skills are deemed appropriate for the character. Classes award skills as part of the class, as do some races and cultures, and should be considered. While there are Skill Points in Storm & Steel, by default, any Game Master assigned skills typically have no cost. However, any skills that a player desires - that the Game Master deems not to be in reasonable alignment with their class, race, occupation, culture, background, etc., are not free and must be purchased with available Skill Points.

'''SKILLS THAT ARE LIMITED OR NOT FREE OR DO NOT EXIST'''

LIMITING: There may be some skills that a Game Master may limit or even disallow for the character altogether. While certain skills might be certainly be appropriate for a particular class, the Game Master may rule that the character will receive a skill at no cost once they attain a certain level - or if they want it sooner, they must buy the skill with Skill Points. Additionally, for some campaigns, a Game Master may require that an appropriate Non-Player Character or Player Character must be found to train another in a new skill before it can be awarded, whether or not the skill is free.

NON-FREE SKILLS AND EXCEPTIONS: If, for example, a player wishes to have Hiding as a free skill for their Knight character, the Game Master may rule that Hiding must be purchased since it typically may not fit the usual skills learned by squires during training to become a knight. A player could try to persuade the Game Master into awarding Hiding at no cost for that character if they have a good character background concept that might warrant the skill. A Knight, who during their training, was squired to a knight of the Dark Empire who regularly sent their squires to assassinate or spy on his adversary's minions could warrant the gifting of the Hiding skill if the Game Master sinks their teeth into the concept. Sometimes, the Game Master might go with "rule of cool" for character concepts that fit nicely into a concept or campaign.

NON-EXISTENT SKILLS: In some cases, there may be skills that simply do not exist in their milieu. If, for example, a player desires to have Gun Smithing for their character, they should not be allowed to have the skill if there are no firearms in the milieu.

'''BOLSTERING SKILLS'''

Skill Points may be used to raise the score of a skill. This represents a character with additional time, energy, and resources invested into a skill.

[[Skill Reference List | Skill Reference List]]: This is simply a mixed, uncategorized reference list of skills. Some skill names will be changed and reorganized, but all will be categorized in the future. This list does not offer descriptions for the skills.
