==[[S&S: Speed | '''SPEED''']]== Each character has a base speed for their racial type. Speed is modified downward by encumbrance, heavy or restrictive armor and shields; and may be adjusted upward by special class abilities or magic. Speed determines how far a character can move per segment in combat. Speed can be in actual feet when no combat grid is used; or in inches when a grid is used. The first number is the maximum distance when moving normally or rushing forward at the quickest, while the second number is the maximum distance moved during a charge. '''Grid Scale and Speed:''' There are a few scales that can be used when using a 1" grid and miniatures. In Storm & Steel, the default scales are: * '''1" = 3-1/3':''' Every 3 squares are equal to 10' This is the default suggested ground scale, as this allows three human-sized miniatures to easily stand abreast in a 10' wide dungeon hall. * '''1" = 5':''' When space is at a premium on the tabletop, this scale can help. However, this can cause a lot of clutter if three human-sized miniatures are standing abreast in a 10' wide dungeon hall. * '''1" = 10':''' Great for outdoor scenes, particularly if miniatures of a smaller scale are available. Moving the distance within the normal category doesn't change any die roll considerations; while charging awards a bonus to attack and damage but makes the charging character easier to strike. If a spear-like weapon is set into the ground versus a charging character and they are successfully struck, additional damage dice are rolled.
